The ‘Vampire Facial’ – the treatment that has nothing to do with Halloween!

With Halloween soon approaching, we’ll be seeing some eclectic costumes up and down the country, with the phenomenon growing year upon year in the UK.

On the subject of Halloween, you may have heard of the ‘Vampire Facial’ which has become extremely popular over the past 12 months. The treatment, which has been endorsed by several famous names, has little to do with vampires or having your blood sucked by one – hopefully, this will encourage you to read on!

What is this intriguingly named treatment?

Consider times when you have a fall, graze your leg and start bleeding – your body eventually manages to stop the bleeding. But how is this achieved? Blood cells known as platelets help the body create clots to stop the bleeding and then activate white blood cells to get rid of debris and dead cells – pretty cool eh?! These amazing platelets then trigger tissue repair and growth. You might be asking what all of this means in the context of a vampire facial.

The treatment works by tricking the brain into thinking your body has been injured, prompting the process described above. The vampire facial is also known as PRP (platelet-rich-plasma) treatment.

How does it work?

So we’ve established that PRP treatment uses your own blood to trigger the body’s healing and repair processes. A sample of 20ml is taken and spun in a centrifuge (a piece of equipment used for the separation of fluids) for 8 minutes, separating the platelets from other blood components. It was discovered in 2004 that extracting plasma via centrifuge leads to the release of proteins that promote collagen growth and wound healing. The result? Firmer, tighter, younger-looking skin. You’ll also notice a difference in skin tone, texture and volume.

Because full collagen regeneration takes up to 2 months, the restorative effects of a vampire facial continue for 2-3 months after treatment. Results will then last for around 12 months afterwards.

One of the most appealing aspects of a vampire facial is the short treatment time (30-45 minutes) and lack of recovery time. You’ll be able to go back to your normal activities the day after treatment though you will have red skin for a couple of days after the procedure.
