What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a popular, non-surgical aesthetic treatment. It is also called collagen induction. The procedure is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a microneedling device that is moved around the skin to create minor skin injuries. These injuries are to promote the growth of new skin cells.

Microneedling is hailed as one of the newer and safer non-surgical treatments due to the minimal damage that it inflicts and the noticeable results it delivers.

How Does Microneedling Work?

The functioning of microneedling is quite basic but adequate. It goes by many names, including skin needling or collagen induction treatment. It works by inducing regulated micro-injuries in the skin.

During the treatment, we use a device with tiny needles that puncture the top layer of the skin and produce microscopic channels that activate the body’s natural healing process.

These micro-injuries encourage the skin to produce collagen and elastin, the two proteins that help the skin’s strength, general health and elasticity. Collagen is an important component of the skin’s structure, providing stability and firmness, while elastin helps the skin stretch and bounce back to its original shape.

Microneedling also enables improved absorption of topical skincare products such as serums and moisturisers, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin and provide more effective benefits.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Our microneedling treatment offers numerous benefits for the skin, especially for people who are looking for a cosmetic upgrade without going under the knife. Some of the benefits of getting microneedling from Artistic Clinic include the following:

Improved skin texture

Microneedling is excellent at improving skin texture by encouraging the production of elastin and collagen. As the body continues to age, there is a decline in the production of these two proteins. Microneedling helps to encourage the production of new cells to start.

The process can take days or weeks, depending on how deeply the needles penetrate. However, the skin will start healing instantly, and the texture will become noticeably softer.

Scar treatment

Microneedling can also help reduce the appearance of any previous scarring, whether from hyperpigmentation or acne scarring. The treatment encourages the production of new cells to replace damaged skin cells.

Blackhead treatment

Microneedling can also help to reduce the appearance of blackheads and acne. The micro-needles puncture the top layer of the skin, removing recurring blackheads as they emerge. After this process, the pores are visibly smaller, particularly around the nose.

Slow ageing

Microneedling can help to slow down the signs of ageing. The treatment can help activate growth factors in the skin, aiding the repair process. The process works when the body gets stimulated, encouraging the natural production of collagen, which reduces wrinkles and fine lines.

The treatment can also be used as a preventative measure for ageing skin. Combining regular microneedling treatments with an effective skincare routine will help the skin look more glowy and youthful.

Hyperpigmentation treatment

If you’re struggling with hyperpigmentation, microneedling can help with that, promoting exfoliation of the top layer of the skin where hyperpigmentation often resides. This helps to remove the excess melanin that causes the dark spots or patches associated with hyperpigmentation.

Microneedling creates microchannels in the skin, allowing for better penetration of depigmenting agents, such as topical creams. This process increases collagen levels and leads to skin rejuvenation, including improved skin tone, texture, and reduced appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Acne treatment

Microneedling can help diminish the appearance of acne scars. It creates microchannels in the skin that allow better absorption of topical acne medications. This can improve the effectiveness of acne treatments by ensuring deeper penetration into the skin. This targets the underlying causes of acne, such as bacteria, excess oil and inflammation. This process can also lead to a smoother skin texture

I have been a returning customer to Artistry Clinic for a number of years. My first treatment was for nose reshaping, I was so happy with the results, I have since returned multiple times and have expanded to receive other filler based treatment. I am always made to feel comfortable and have absolute confidence in the results every time.

Procedure

Consultation:

Our skilled practitioners will have a detailed discussion regarding your skin concerns and expectations to ensure clarity. A thorough skin assessment will be conducted to explore microneedling’s potential to address your specific concerns and meet your aesthetic goals. This assessment helps gauge your skin’s current state and how it can be enhanced. Together, with a collaborative approach, we’ll design a personalised treatment plan that aligns with your skincare goals, ensuring each step is tailored for optimum results while keeping you informed and comfortable.

Preparation:

Stop using retinol or retin-A products, and any topical prescription medications at least 48 hours before your appointment. On your appointment day, ensure your face is clean, and free from makeup and skincare products for better treatment results and smoother post-treatment recovery.

Application:

A numbing cream will be applied to minimise discomfort, followed by the gentle gliding of the Dermapen device over the skin to create tiny needle abrasions. Collagen-stimulating products like Hyaluronic Acid may be used to enhance results. The adjustable speed and depth of Dermapen ensures a personalised treatment experience.

We encourage our clients to understand the different skin treatments we offer at our skin clinic in London to ensure they have realistic expectations.

With microneedling, you may need a few sessions before you can start seeing any long-lasting results. The amount you will need depends on the condition of your skin and factors such as health, elasticity and age.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Micro-needling is one of the safest, non-surgical aesthetic treatments, but it is not without risks. Commonly reported temporary side effects include swelling, redness, itchiness and skin flaking, among others. These are more likely to happen to people with sensitive skin. However, we provide you with aftercare tips that help fast-track the healing process and ensure you can overcome these side effects quickly.

Aftercare:

After the Microneedling treatment, expect to experience some mild redness and possibly a bit of swelling. These effects are typical and usually subside within about 24-48 hours post-treatment. It’s advisable to follow a gentle skincare routine, avoiding any harsh or abrasive products on the treated area to support the healing process. Over the next few days to weeks, as your skin goes through its natural rejuvenation process, you’ll start to notice a smoother, brighter complexion, as the appearance of imperfections is reduced and your skin gains a more youthful glow.

Types of Microneedling Treatments

Although all microneedling treatments use the same basic principle of creating microscopic channels on the skin, they vary in their application methods and effects. But we can use different methods to achieve results depending on your goals and the nature of your skin.

Derma Roller

A derma roller is one of the simpler tools used for microneedling. Derma rollers are mainly designed for home use, but they work using the same principle.

Dermapen

This is a specialised microneedling device that creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin using a series of adjustable needles. It can be used to treat a variety of skin issues.

Radiofrequency Microneedling

This treatment combines the benefits of microneedling with the skin tightening effects of radiofrequency technology. It can be used to treat fine lines, wrinkles and drooping skin.
