I have been a returning customer to Artistry Clinic for a number of years. My first treatment was for nose reshaping, I was so happy with the results, I have since returned multiple times and have expanded to receive other filler based treatment. I am always made to feel comfortable and have absolute confidence in the results every time.

Procedure

Consultation:

Before a pHformula skin resurfacing treatment, you will have a consultation with one of our specialists who will assess your skin type, concerns, and goals. Based on this assessment, a personalised plan will be created, outlining the formula strength, number of sessions, and necessary post-care products.

Preparation:

At least two weeks before your treatment, avoid direct sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily. It is also recommended to stop using exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs, retinol) or abrasive scrubs for 3 - 5 days prior to minimise irritation. Additionally, refrain from waxing, laser treatments, or chemical peels for2 weeks before the pHformula resurfacing session.

Application:

The skin is cleansed to remove makeup and impurities before applying specific pHformula complexes based on the skin issue. This system gently exfoliates without harsh peeling, stimulating regeneration in the deeper layers while preserving the surface. After a set time, the active ingredients are neutralised to prevent over-treatment. The entire process takes 30 – 45 minutes and is tailored to your skin’s sensitivity.

Aftercare:

Post-treatment care is essential for maintaining results and preventing complications. Use a high SPF (30 or higher) daily to protect resurfaced skin and avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks. Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturiser regularly, and choose non-comedogenic products recommended by your clinician. Avoid harsh exfoliants, scrubs, and products with acids or retinol for at least one week to prevent sensitivity.

FAQ

pHformula treatments use unique formulations based on regenerative medicine to exfoliate the skin’s surface and stimulate cell renewal in deeper layers. The system targets specific skin concerns and boosts collagen production for healthier, more radiant skin.

pHformula treats a variety of skin concerns, including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, redness, and uneven skin tone. Each concern is treated with specific pHformula complexes designed for targeted skin issues.

Yes, pHformula treatments are safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin. Your practitioner will assess your skin type during consultation and tailor the treatment strength to meet your skin’s needs.

Unlike traditional chemical peels that can cause intense peeling and downtime, pHformula uses controlled chemical resurfacing, allowing for minimal irritation while still achieving noticeable results. It works progressively with the skin’s natural healing process.

It is best to avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours after the treatment to allow your skin to heal and breathe. After that, you can wear lightweight, non-comedogenic makeup if needed.

The pHformula resurfacing treatment is not painful. In fact, it is considered to be a somewhat comfortable experience. You may feel mild tingling or warmth during application, but it’s not typically painful. The intensity can be adjusted based on your tolerance.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is when your skin develops dark spots or patches that are darker than the surrounding skin. This happens because the skin produces excess melanin around these areas.

Hyperpigmentation is quite common and is usually harmless. Most of it is attributed to sun exposure, which leads the skin to produce more melanin. However, sun exposure is not the only reason for hyperpigmentation. Other factors like inflammation and hormonal changes may also be to blame. That is why it is crucial to understand the different kinds of hyperpigmentation, as this understanding could advise on the best way to handle and manage the condition.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation occurs in different forms depending on what is causing it. The known forms of this condition include:

Melasma

This is a form of hyperpigmentation that causes brown or grey skin patches to appear on the face. It is also possible for the patches to appear on other parts of the body that are exposed to the sun, like the neck and arms.

The condition is mainly caused by sun exposure, but it can also occur due to changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy and hormonal imbalances caused by certain medical conditions. Melasma hyperpigmentation may also have genetic tendencies.

Sunspots

Sunspots develop over time due to repeated sun exposure and a combination of sun damage and the ageing of the skin. These are also called liver spots, solar lentigines or age spots. They are flat, light brown or dark spots. They develop as the skin produces increased melanin levels to protect itself from the damaging UV rays of the sun.

Skin damage or Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

This occurs when the skin is damaged or injured, producing an inflammatory response that triggers increased melanin production. The inflammation could be caused by acne, a cut or even a skin condition like eczema. Determining the cause of inflammation so you can get the proper treatment for the condition is crucial.

Freckles

Freckles are also a type of hyperpigmentation that is often genetic. They are characterised by small, concentrated areas of increased melanin production, usually around the cheeks.

Age spots

These are similar to sunspots. However, the differentiating factor is that they become more common as we age, but are usually also caused by long-term sun exposure.

Generally, hyperpigmentation is harmless and doesn’t pose any health risks. However, it can be a cosmetic concern for many people who want to achieve an even skin tone, and that is why we offer hyperpigmentation treatment at our clinic in London.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation results from increased melanin production by the skin cells called melanocytes. These can happen for multiple reasons, including:

  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Medications like chemotherapy drugs, antidepressants and antibiotics
  • Thyroid disorder
  • Adrenal disorders such as Addison’s disease.

Additionally, some factors could make you more prone to hyperpigmentation, such as:

  • Having darker skin due to higher amounts of melanin
  • Drugs that increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight
  • Genetics, such as a family tendency to have freckles
  • Consuming oral contraceptives, which affect your hormone levels

Our Treatment Options for Hyperpigmentation

There are different ways to treat hyperpigmentation. Some treatments are available over the counter and can be administered at home, such as:

Skin lightening products

Products containing ingredients such as hydroquinone can be used to help lighten dark spots at home.

A brightening serum with vitamin C

for mild and moderate hyperpigmentation, serums containing vitamin C can help fade the dark spots. Vitamin C can also protect the skin from future sun damage and other environmental stressors.

Sunblock

Sunscreen is an essential factor when treating hyperpigmentation, and where possible, it should be worn daily when going outside.

Retinol

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A that promotes skin cell turnover deep within the layers of the skin. Retinol helps to even skin tone and refine pores.

While these options may be effective for mild hyperpigmentation, some cases may require more effective measures, which are only available at our clinic. Some of the treatment options we offer for hyperpigmentation at the Artistry Clinic include:

Glycolic or Salicylic Acid Peels

These skin peels can promote skin cell turnover to a greater degree. They can help fade dark spots, brighten the skin, decrease the appearance of pores and minimise fine lines.

We may recommend a series of skin peels for the best results. But this depends on your skin type, the degree of hyperpigmentation and the results you’re looking for.

Microdermabrasion

This is a mechanical exfoliation method that uses an abrasive surface to remove the top layer of the skin manually. The process is gentle and promotes cell turnover, similar to other skin resurfacing methods at our skin clinic in London.

Microdermabrasion can eradicate hyperpigmentation and also decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. However, you experienced mild redness after the procedure, but it disappeared shortly after. The number of sessions necessary will vary and will be determined during consultation with our doctor-led team.

Laser skin resurfacing

This is the most advanced and effective option we offer. Laser treatments help to treat hyperpigmentation at a deep layer. However, it is important to note that following laser treatment, your hyperpigmentation can become darker for some time before the skin sheds and peels off. Just like other skin resurfacing treatments, you will need an assessment to determine the series of treatments you need.
